Smartphones hold email, banking, photos, and 2FA codes. Lost or unlocked, they're a goldmine. A few settings turn one into a brick for a thief.
Treat it like a laptop
Phones need passcodes, updates, anti-malware (especially on Android), and you should avoid storing confidential data on them when you don't have to.
- Use a 6+ digit passcode or biometric.
- Turn on auto-updates for OS and apps.
- Only install apps from official stores; verify the publisher.
- Enable Find My / Find My Device with remote wipe.
Be picky about apps and permissions
Malicious apps disguise themselves as antivirus or utilities. Even legit apps can over-collect — review what you've granted location, mic, contacts, and photos.
- Stick to well-known brands for security apps.
- Audit permissions monthly; revoke what you don't use.
- Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi auto-join when not needed.
